Portland has a rich history with the tournament. What is the format of the tournament?

Every year, the NCAA Tournament is comprised of 64 teams. This includes 32 automatic conference champions (meaning the winner of the conference tournament) and 32 at-large selections. The first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament are held at 16 on-campus sites throughout the country. The top four seeds in each region serve as the host. Sixteen teams emerge from these rounds to play in the third and fourth rounds of the brackets at the main regional site. Each venue hosts four teams that match up against each other. The teams play in the regional semifinals, the Sweet Sixteen games, and a regional final, the Elite Eight game. The winner of the regional final goes on to play in the Final Four. Teams will always stay on their side of the bracket. For example, if a team is placed in the Portland region, then they must advance through the Portland semifinals and finals to reach the Final Four. However, it is not possible to know which teams will be placed in the Portland region until the seeds are announced on the selection show following the end of season play.

Will the NCAA Tournament return to Portland in the future?

The host of the regional bracket tends to change every year. Even though Portland previously hosted the tournament, that does not guarantee it will host another regional in the future. The NCAA considers a variety of different factors when choosing the next site for its tournament games, including the suitability of the venue.
