Hailing from the culture capital of the world, New York City, Yasiin bey grew up in Brooklyn as the oldest child of twelve siblings. Always drawn to performance and the stage, Yasiin's earlier years were spent trying his hand at acting, with him making trips between New York and Los Angeles as he attempted to make his break into the performance mainstream. He eventually dropped out of high school to continue his acting passion, working in the New York theatre industry, before finally turning his talents to music and hip hop in the mid 90s.
Yasiin's music career kicked off with the rap group Urban Thermo Dynamics, working with various old friends and community members before he decided to make a break for himself and kicked off his solo career in 1996. Working with established producer and vocalist De La Soul, he soon signed onto Rawkus Records and began working with Talib Kweli, forming the infamous rap duo Black Star. The duo went on to put out a series of hit singles that threw Mos Def into the musical mainstream, with constant play across the airwaves, with his work being recognized by VH1 as some of the greatest hip hop tracks of all time.
Mos Def moved back into the solo world, moving onto Geffen Records as he spent the 00s propelling his solo career into the stratosphere. His work began to integrate and fuse together multiple disparate genres with an overarching hip hop thrust, including elements of blues, rock, and soul, with Mos Def's career moving slightly into the rock and roll world for a time that would fetch him his first ever nominations by the prestigious Grammy Awards. Mos Def has a close relationship with his mother, who helped him propel his career to awe inspiring heights. His mother, who goes by the nickname Umi, has become a motivational speaker for single women raising children and penned the book Shine Your Light: A Life Skills Workbook, which chronicled her time raising her son and helping him reach his goals.
