Wishbone Ash is a classic rock band formed in England in 1969 and still going strong after five decades on the rock scene. Together, the band traveled a tumultuous road: from fame to obscurity and back, to chart-topping success, to court battles, reunions and even techno pop. Touring throughout the United States and Europe, the band continues to thrill audiences and release new albums.
Singer and bassist Martin Turner and drummer Steve Upton, trying to complete their power trio (back in the day), could not decide between two final candidates – guitarists Andy Powell and Ted Turner. Someone suggested the band add both guitarists, to see how it would work out. (It worked out fine.)
Other bands had two guitarists in the line-up before, but Wishbone Ash was one of the first to pioneer the twin-lead sound with the guitarists taking “double solos” and playing harmonic melodies. They also included elements of folk, jazz and classical music, creating lush arrangements with a strong progressive rock feel.
Getting the opening slot for Deep Purple in 1970, Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore suggested them to Derek Lawrence, who produced Purple’s early albums. Wishbone Ash secured a record deal and, with Lawrence producing, released a series of popular albums that are classics today.
Their first, self-titled album came out in 1970, followed the next year by Pilgrimage, then in 1972 by Argus. This third album was their commercial peak, and many fans consider it the band’s best one.
After a live album in 1973, Ted Turner left the band. Replaced by Laurence “Laurie” Wisefield, the members began experimenting with new directions while releasing several unsuccessful albums. As the 1980s dawned, the band recorded more commercial music; this caused Martin Turner to leave the band. Following this, they had an extended period of line-up instability, but no commercial success until the four original members reunited for a couple of albums. Since their beginning, the band has released more than two dozen albums.
Line-up changes continued into the 90s and the new millennium, even finding various original members sliding in and out throughout the times.
