Winter Garden Theatre

Winter Garden Theater Tickets

The Winter Garden Theater in New York has a long and storied history. The theater is housed in the American Horse Exchange, which was built by William K. Vanderbilt in 1896. The Shubert family leased the exchange in 1911 and converted the Winter Garden into a theater at the same time. The conversion entailed turning the equestrian show ring into an auditorium with one balcony with a garden motif. The dimensions of the horse exchange resulted in a wider than normal playhouse, which brings the audience closer to the stage. The ceiling was covered in sky blue canvas and trimmed with latticework. Garlands, vines and leaves were interlaced on the box fronts and the arch. A renovation in 1923 covered the trusses, lowered the ceiling and added more ornamentation. The Winter Garden Theater received an extensive renovation in 2001, reimagining its former 1920s aura. This Broadway playhouse has been home to productions such as

Peter Pan
