The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins is a minor league affiliate program of the
Pittsburgh Penguins
of the NHL. Though the Penguins technically reside in Wilkes-Barre, they have the distinction — unique in American sports — of representing two towns, both in northern Pennsylvania. The team was established by Pittsburgh in 1999 after the purchase of a defunct Canadian franchise that had been dormant for several years. The Penguins opened the inaugural season with a 4-2 victory over the Kentucky Thoroughblades. In its second season, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went all the way to the Calder Cup final, losing to the Saint Johns Flames in six games. The team subsequently earned a berth in the 2004 and 2008 Calder Cup final. However, it lost to Milwaukee in four games and Chicago in six games, respectively. The Penguins captured the MacGregor Kilpatrick Trophy, which is awarded to the league’s regular-season champion, in 2011 and 2017. Grab your Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tickets at StubHub.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins began the 2019–2020 season on Oct. 5, 2019, with a road game against the
Hershey Bears
. The season concludes on April 11, 2020, with a home game against the
Hartford Wolf Pack
. Other pivotal division opponents include the
Bridgeport Sound Tigers
, the
Providence Bruins
, the
Lehigh Valley Phantoms
and the
Springfield Thunderbirds
. The team also plays several important games against the
Charlotte Checkers
in January. If Wilkes-Barre/Scranton qualifies for the postseason as one of the top four teams in the division, then it will begin playoffs set for the week of April 13.
''Wilkes-Barre/Scranton narrowly missed out on the playoffs with a record of 36-30, plus seven overtime losses and three shootout losses. Despite accumulating 82 points, the team was five points behind the Providence Bruins for the final playoff spot in the division.'
'Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s biggest rival is the Hershey Bears. Located closely to each other in the state of Pennsylvania, both teams are consistently competitive in the AHL, and their postseason matchups have continued to fuel the rivalry beyond what mere geography can account for. Hershey alone has won three Calder Cup championships since the Penguins joined the league in 1999. One of the most memorable matchups was a 2-1 overtime win over the Bears in the 2013 AHL Outdoor Classic in front of more than 17,000 spectators. The balance of power has shifted back and forth between the teams. However, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has had dominant stretches. It won 10 of 12 matchups in the 2014 regular season.'
'The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hired veteran Head Coach Mike Vellucci on June 28, 2019. Over his two-decade coaching career, Vellucci had led the Plymouth Whalers of the junior Ontario Hockey League and the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League. His 2018–2019 tenure with Charlotte concluded with the Calder Cup championship and the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award for AHL Coach of the Year. Starting in 2014, Vellucci was the assistant general manager and director of hockey operations for the Carolina Hurricanes, with which he played a key role in developing talent.'
