''The Broncos is a member of the Mid-American Conference, which has been around since 1946. The MAC has 12 teams in its stable with six teams in the West Division and six teams in the East Division. The MAC Tournament basketball games are held at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse with a contract with the arena through the 2023 season.'
'Steve Hawkins has coached the Broncos basketball team since 2003 when he was named the 13th head coach for Western Michigan's basketball program. During this long tenure, Hawkins has produced winning teams year after year. Under Hawkins, the Broncos squad has made seven post-season appearances and has earned two NCAA tournament berths for 2004 and 2014. Western Michigan has also finished in the top three MAC West for 11 straight seasons, which is a record in school history. Hawkins has led the Broncos to two MAC Tournament titles, two regular-season titles and eight MAC West titles. Hawkins is the longest-tenured head coach in the MAC, and he guided the Broncos to seven of its 11 seasons with 20 wins each. The Broncos team has earned double-digit wins for nine consecutive seasons under Hawkins.'
'The Broncos play in the Read Fieldhouse/University Arena at Western Michigan. The facility is named after former basketball coach Herbert W. Read, who led the Broncos for 28 seasons. The arena was renovated for the 2015-2016 season and received a new court, new LED lighting and a new sound system. There is a pep band that sits under an overhang, and a four-sided video board is over center court. A scoreboard with player data and a game clock are behind each basket. The WMU Hall of Fame is in the entrance and displays an impressive number of plaques.'

The Broncos program has a long-standing rivalry with the

across all athletic programs. The schools are only 134 miles apart, which makes this rivalry even more personal. Each year, the schools compete in the Mid-American Conference in the West Division. The Broncos basketball team lost to the Chippewas in the MAC Tournament for the 2018-2019 season.
''Over the history of the Broncos basketball program, there has been many outstanding players. Some of these notable alumni include Manny Newsome (1961-64), who scored over 500 points in 1964 and held that record for 46 years; Paul Griffin (1972-76), the leading rebounder with an overall 1000 points; Joe Reitz (2004-08), in the top five of WMU's scorers and rebounders; and David Kool (2006-10), who was a top leading scorer with an overall record of 2,122 points.'
