The Wells Fargo Championship is an annual golf tournament that brings together some of the top talents from the sport for a week in North Carolina. It is the largest annual golf tournament in the state. The inaugural tournament was held in 2003, back when it was originally known as the Wachovia Championship. After Wells Fargo absorbed Wachovia, the event changed its name to the current iteration. With the exception of 2017, when it was briefly hosted by the
Eagle Point Golf Club
in the city of Wilmington, Charlotte has been the exclusive home of the tournament for its entire run. Past winners of the tournament have included Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk and Vijay Singh. You can purchase Wells Fargo Championship tickets at StubHub, the leading source for live events.
The Wells Fargo Championship is a four-day tournament. Like most golf tournaments, it is a stroke play event in which players compete to achieve the lowest score over the same 18 holes every round. If players fail to achieve a certain score or ranking by the end of the second round, then they are eliminated from the tournament and unable to compete in the final two rounds.
The 2020 Wells Fargo Championship schedule is set to take place between April 27th and May 3rd. During the first three days of the tournament, attendees can experience the practice rounds and the Pro-Am sessions. The main tournament begins on Thursday, April 30th and lasts the entire weekend.
The winner of the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship was Max Homa with a score of 15 under par. Joel Dahmen and Justin Rose finished in second and third places, respectively, with scores of 12 under and 11 under par. There was also a four-way tie for fourth place between Jason Dufner, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia and Paul Casey at nine-under.
Club members will have access to exclusive features, but even members of the general public can experience plenty of activities. During the tournament week, kids will have access to an exclusive village and a designated area to watch the players warm-up prior to tee off. Special events include a women’s day and a Pro-Am tournament in which numerous teams comprised of one professional and various amateurs compete for prizes. You can also attend a special Craft Beer Festival to sample the local craft beer from Charlotte on Friday and Saturday afternoon of the tournament week. However, you will need to purchase additional festival tickets to gain entry.
Quail Hollow Club, which stretches for more than 7,500 yards, was built by George Cobb in 1961 and redesigned several times by Tom Fazio. It is primarily known for the devious final holes at the 16th, 17th and 18th, which have been nicknamed The Green Mile. The 494-yard par-4 final hole, which features a narrow fairway, a bunker on the right and a creek on the left, makes for a difficult finish. Before the introduction of the Wells Fargo Championship, the club had previously hosted the Kemper Open between 1969 and 1979 and the World Seniors Invitational between 1980 and 1989. It was also the host of the 99th
PGA Championship
in 2017, which was won by Justin Thomas.
