Started in 1983 by Jeff Krueger, WE Fest is the largest country music festival in the US. The festival is held every year in early August at the Soo Pass Dude Ranch in Detroit Lakes, Minn. Recent WE Fest concerts have drawn crowds of more than 150,000 over the three-day event, and as many as 40,000 camp on the festival grounds. Twenty acts play the 142-foot stage, while 50,000 revelers at a time fill the amphitheater known as The Bowl. In 2018, WE Fest was nominated for the Academy of Country Music Festival of the Year.
The first WE Fest, which was inspired by a worldwide rock festival knows as US Fest, was held in an open-air barn at the Soo Pass Dude Ranch for around 9,000 attendees. Merle Haggard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tammy Wynette, Tom T. Hall, Bellamy Brothers and Freddy Fender all played. But it was headliners
Alabama
that brought in the crowds. For this first event, the audience had to bring their own lawn chairs, and many rushed through the gates to grab a spot close to the stage. In 2003, when the festival was having some financial trouble, Krueger arranged for Kenny Chesney, George Strait and Tim McGraw to headline. The appearance of all three stars got the festival back on its feet. Alabama returned to the WE Fest stage in 2012 for the 30th anniversary celebration.

Camping is at the heart of the WE Fest experience, and many come back year after year to set up mini towns in the six campgrounds. The campgrounds are designated for families, young adults or night owls, and WE Fest campers can come to the festival as early as Tuesday night. Artists will perform on the Barn Stage Tuesday and Wednesday night for early attendees. On the festival grounds, attendees can enjoy more than 20 food and drink vendors, the WE Bar and the WE Fest Walk of Fame. Most of the WE Fest performers over the years have left their handprints in the cement of the Walk of Fame. The VIP experience includes catered meals and free drinks every day of the festival.
WE Fest is always held the first weekend in August.
Artists play the main stage from 3 p.m. until midnight. Some of the main stage performers play a late-night encore set on the Barn Stage on the opposite side of the amphitheater.
