The Washington Spirit is the name of the women's professional soccer club that competes in the top-tier
National Women's Soccer League
. The club was founded in 2011 and named D.C. United Women's club. Initially, the team competed in the defunct W-League, which was later named NWSL. There are also amateur and youth clubs for upcoming female athletes that compete under the banner of the Washington Spirit. Despite its fame as one of the top women's soccer clubs in America, the Washington Spirit team has had many ups and downs throughout its short history. The initial seasons didn't prove successful as the Spirits were quickly toppled in the playoffs. However, changes in 2015 and subsequent seasons led to regular success. Perhaps, these successful campaigns were the reason that many of the team's top players were traded to other local and international teams. Unable to cope with the loss, the management quickly signed up high-profile players including Mallory Pugh to streamline performances in the coming years. You can watch the team play at
Maryland SoccerPlex
, which is the traditional home of the Washington Spirit. To generate more interest in the game and to accommodate a greater number of fans, the team also plays at the Audi Stadium in Washington D.C. and the
Segra Field
in Virginia. Depending on the expected crowd, the team uses all three stadiums to host its matches. The
Audi Stadium
is the largest of these venues accommodating up to 20,000 spectators. Still, Maryland SoccerPlex is the main venue for most regular-season home games. In the future, the team may move to a permanent location at the DC United training center in Leesburg.
The Spirit twice gained a semifinal berth in the 2014 and 2015 seasons before reaching the final in 2016. In 2016, the team remained leaders throughout the season only to end up runners up in the last stages of the regular season. Despite missing the top spot, the team reached the final but was denied a victory when they lost the match against
Western New York Flash
on penalties.
The team and its fans share a mutually beneficial relationship as they continuously strive to garner strong community support. The Spirit Squadron is the unofficial support group that was started by three friends. Members of the group are a closely-knit family who also run a dedicated website and a Facebook page. To appreciate the commitment and support, the club has established a dedicated fan zone at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Besides offering discounted merchandise, benefits include access to gameday-staple Famous Dave’s and other features. The fan zone is open to all the regular ticket holders who may also want to enjoy special in-seat offers such as hot dogs and beverages.
You can easily get tickets to every game at StubHub, the world's largest online marketplace for sports tickets and resale. The San Francisco-based company backs its tickets with a FanProtect guarantee. FanProtect guarantee allows ticket holders to get full compensation if the match is canceled or rescheduled.
There are nine teams in the
NWSL
and all of these teams represent the top level of women's soccer in the United States. The league is endorsed by the
US Soccer Association
. Many of these teams are affiliates of the US Men's Soccer clubs allowing them to share coaching and training facilities. The Washington Spirit competes with all other teams in a home and away fixture to finalize the semi-finalists. The end of the playoff is the final match that decides the eventual champion.
