'The Wake Forest Demon Deacons is one of the multitude of North Carolina teams that populate the Atlantic Coast Conference. This means that Wake Forest fans are fortunate to enjoy multiple natural rivalries on their home court each season. While many fans will forever associate the Demon Deacons with the dominant force named Tim Duncan, Wake Forest is the scrappy upstart playing against blue chip programs such as University of North Carolina and Duke University. While the Demon Deacons team is often the underdog in conference games, it has been known to pull the occasional seismic upset. Wake Forest has been playing basketball since 1906 and has won more than 1,500 games in its history. This includes 23 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, most recently in 2017. 'Longtime college basketball fans remember Danny Manning as the player who almost single-handedly carried Kansas to a Final Four title in 1986. Now, Manning is in his sixth year at the helm of the Wake Forest program. The most successful coach in program history was Dave Odom.'
'While Wake Forest has in the past been a frequent participant at March Madness, the school has only advanced to the Sweet Sixteen nine times in its history. The Demon Deacons team is still trying to get back to the Final Four after the school's lone berth back in 1962. The team's last time in the Sweet Sixteen was in 2004, and the last time it made the Elite Eight was in the Duncan-era in 1996.'
'The Demon Deacons plays in the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Its home court seats nearly 15,000 fans and was built in 1989. The Coliseum is one of the newer arenas in the Atlantic Coast Conference and has recently undergone renovations after Wake Forest purchased the arena from the City of Winston Salem. The Wake Forest student section is called the Screamin Deacons.'
'Of course, the conversation of Wake Forest's best players begins with Duncan, who was a transformational force in the middle. He led Wake Forest to a regular-season ACC title. NBA star Chris Paul was a mainstay of the strong Demon Deacons teams under the late coach Skip Prosser. NBA fans will also recognize the name of former Wake Forest player Muggsy Bogues, who was the shortest player ever to suit up in the NBA. Legendary announcer Billy Packer was also a program great in the 1960s.'
'
The Demon Deacons fielded a young squad in 2018-2019 and struggled in the stacked ACC when the
Duke Blue Devils
, the
North Carolina Tar Heels
and the
Virginia Cavaliers
were strong as always. The team finished with its second consecutive 11-20 record. However, the program has now built roster depth and has numerous returning players at its disposal.
''Since 1985, there have been 11 NBA first-rounders who have been drafted from the Demon Deacons. The prize was Duncan, who was selected first overall in 1997. Recently, Jeff Teague and John Collins have been selected early in the NBA Draft and have found success in the league. Collins is a front court player with the Atlanta Hawks who has shown promise in his young career.'
