What was once a romantic comedy film starring actress Keri Russell eventually became one of Broadway's hottest musicals —
Waitress
. The story, which is set in a small-town diner, features dreamy-eyed pie maker and waitress Jenna. At the beginning of the musical, the lonely waitress hides in a loveless marriage behind a love of pie recipes. That a character like Jenna could exist in any one of the diners that line the roads of Baltimore on the way to DC is what gives this show its charm and its ability to tug at the heartstrings.
The musical
Waitress
has gotten more than its share of nods and accolades. In addition, this show holds the distinction of being the first musical in Broadway history to have had four women hold the top spots in the creative team. The book was written by Jessie Nelson, and its score was composed by
Sara Bareilles
. Lorin Latarro did the choreography, and Diane Paulus directed the show. Several of these women won big awards like Tonys and Grammys prior to their involvement with the musical.

Waitress
has 22 songs in all. One of the most famous tunes is She Used to Be Mine, which is sung by the main character, Jenna. This song is a sweet and slow ballad. However, the show certainly has plenty of upbeat numbers as well. Songs in the show include What’s Inside, Opening Up, What Baking Can Do, It Only Takes a Taste, You Matter to Me and Everything Changes.
Jessie Mueller originated the character. Mueller also played another key role on the Broadway stage when she took on the role of Carole King in
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
, a role for which she won a Tony Award. Betsy Wolfe also played Jenna as did Katharine McPhee and Nicolette Robinson. The show's composer Sara Bareilles has also played the part of Jenna. Alison Luff began playing the role of Jenna in the middle of 2019. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks had a turn as Jenna in 2019.
Plan on being at the theater for at least two and a half hours when you go to see
Waitress
Baltimore. That timeframe also includes the intermission for the show.
In 2016,
Waitress
was up for a number Tony Awards. It was nominated for Best Musical and its star (at the time) Jessie Mueller was nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Its composer Sara Bareilles also got a nod in the Best Original Score category. Christopher Fitzgerald was nominated for a Tony in the Best Actor in a Musical category as well. While it did not win any Tony Awards, Fitzgerald won a Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for his role in the show.
Waitress
is a study in courage and self-worth cleverly hidden behind pie-baking and hummable songs. Although the show has its origins in the rom-com world, its themes of domestic abuse and loneliness keep it solidly grounded. Theatergoers who love musicals are sure to get a charge out of the emotion-infused songs. As a side note, resident foodies will also appreciate how baking and food play their own role in the show.
