The wealth of natural beauty, arts and culture pervading the state of Virginia is rich indeed. With the gorgeous Shenandoah National Park to the west, miles of beautiful coastline to the east, the cultural influence of Washington, D.C. to the north and countless sites related to Revolutionary and Civil War history scattered throughout, there's a lot to chew on during a visit to Virginia. As home to some of the oldest cities and towns in the nation, the cultural roots go deep, and it shows.
Surprisingly, Virginia doesn't have major sports teams of its own, but it is home to several minor league baseball teams playing in the Appalachian League and the Carolina League, among others. Sit in on a fun-loving game of the Richmond Flying Squirrels or the Bristol Pirates. College sports are also big: The Virginia Tech Hokies football team and the University of Virginia Cavaliers are particularly notable.
Music lovers in Richmond may enjoy visits to The Camel, The Broadberry or The Tin Pan. Over in Arlington, across the Potomac from Washington, D.C., enjoy live bluegrass and rock music at Birchmere Music Hall or the U Street Music Hall.
Festival enthusiasts will enjoy the activities of the Red Wing Roots Music Festival at the beautiful Natural Chimneys Park and Campground in Mount Solon, Virginia.
