Maryland hadn't been to an NCAA tournament for 43 years until Szefc joined and went on to become the coach who would reach 100 career wins faster than the rest. He was the first coach in Maryland history to take the Terrapins to the NCAA Super Regional twice, in 2014 and 2015. Szefc came into Blacksburg with a 392-259-3 career record in 12 seasons as a head coach in NCAA baseball.
