The Villanova Wildcats women's basketball team has competed in the NCAA's Big East division since the 1982-1983 season. The team's first year in action was in 1969 under the direction of Coach Liz Cauley, during which the Wildcats accumulated a disappointing 4-6 record. They then reached a 8-5 record in their second season. The Women's basketball team at Villanova University has appeared in the
NCAA Tournament
11 times. The most successful tournament run by the team was in 2003 when the Wildcats made it all the way to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats have finished the regular season atop the Big East three times, and the team finished in fourth place in the Big East for the 2018-2019 season. The women's basketball team at Villanova University plays home games at the
William B. Finneran Pavilion
. The official opening for the Pavilion was in October 2018. The total of $65 million in upgrades was paid for completely by donors to the project. Finneran Pavilion features an outdoor plaza that can be used for a variety of events and a Hall of Fame to honor the rich history of Villanova basketball.
The official kickoff of the 2019-2020 regular season for the Villanova Wildcats women's basketball team was a Nov. 6 home game against the
George Washington University Colonials
. The season ended for the Wildcats four months later with a March 1 road game against the
Providence College Friars
. The
Big East Tournament
begins March 6.
Redshirt freshman forward Madison Siegrist is a talented offensive player who led the 2019-2020 Villanova Wildcats women's basketball team with 19.6 points a game. The season high for Siegrist was the 41 points she scored against La Salle on Dec. 21. Siegrist has topped the 20-point mark 14 times this season. Mary Gedaka received second-team All-Big East honors for the 2018-2019 season, when she led her team with 14.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. The .661 scoring percentage logged by Gedaka led the Big East and was good enough for third nationwide. She was averaging 17.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest during the 2019-2020 season.
Harry Perretta first took over as head coach of the Villanova Wildcats women's basketball team in 1978. The 2019-2020 season was the last for Perretta as coach of the Wildcats. Perretta is the all-time winningest basketball coach in Villanova Wildcats history and led the team to the NCAA Tournament following 11 seasons. The Wildcats also won three Big East championships and 17 Big 5 titles under the direction of Perretta. Despite ending his 42-year-career as head coach, Perretta will continue to support the team as a special assistant to the athletic director.
Katie Davis shot .395 from three-point range as a member of the Villanova Wildcats women's basketball team. The 247 career three-pointers she tallied while at Villanova place her as third all-time at the school. Davis' 1,293 career points rank her 22nd in team history. Davis was inducted into the Villanova University Varsity Club Hall of Fame Class of 2019. Trish Juhline is one of the most accomplished women's basketball players in Villanova Wildcats history. Juhline's 283 career three-pointers set a team record, and her 1,659 points secured her third place all-time for the Wildcats. She is also the 12th all-time leader in assists with 385.
