Veltins Arena (Arena AufSchalke)
The Veltins-Arena, home stadium of Bundesliga side, Schalkewas, took approximately three years to build. Construction started in November 1998 and finished in August 2001. The Schalke's stadium holds the distinction of being the first fully privately funded stadium in Germany at the cost of Û191 million. The 60,000-plus capacity stadium was initially known as Arena AufSchalke until 2005 when the Brewery C&A Veltins purchased the naming rights of the Veltins-Arena events stadium in a 10-year deal. The Veltins-Arena is famous for its retractable pitch and retractable roof, allowing the venue to host multiple sporting events without ruining the quality of the turf. The best way to travel to Veltins-Arena events is via the main public railway station, Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof. To get to the closest station, Veltins-Arena stop, you can catch line 302 heading towards GE-Beur.
If you are driving yourself to the sports arena, the easiest places to park are on Willy-Brandt-Allee near the movie complex and on Adenauer Allee near the McDonald's, which is adjacent to the Kurt-Schumacher Stra§e.
There are a number of places to eat and drink both inside and outside the complex. Veltins-Arena features more than 15 small restaurants, 35 cafŽs and 50 grilling stations. The stadium also offers a full beer selection.
There are several football-friendly pubs near Gelsenkirchen to visit both before and after the match. Unfortunately, the pubs are not within walking distance of Veltins Arena. Once you've caught the train to the stadium, there are quite a few selections around the grounds that serve beer, cocktails and classic bar food, including Cafe Del Sol.
Veltins Arena events offer the greatest possible accessibility for disabled guests. The arena strives to make it so that all visitors with disabilities will be able to enjoy their visits.
