Varsity Theatre

Varsity Theatre Baton Rouge - A Performance and Event Venue

This one-time movie theater housed in an elegant art deco building is now home to some of Baton Rouge's wildest dance parties accompanied by some of the best live music acts that come through the region. Located right next door to Louisiana State University, this venue's party atmosphere is popular with students and locals alike.

Varsity Theatre History

The Varsity Theatre has been around for decades but not always in its present iteration. Originally opened in 1937 as a movie theater, this charming art deco building was converted in 1991 to its present-day form: a venue hosting live music acts and often an accompanying dance party. With reliably reasonable drink prices and a past performer list that includes the Molly Ringwalds, Moon Taxi and Citizen Cope, it's no surprise that this historic venue has risen to prominence in Louisiana's capital, attracting students, locals and out-of-towners alike to its premises.

Varsity Theatre Events

The Varsity Theatre in Baton Rouge is primarily known for its concert events, but it also hosts a variety of other event types, including watch parties for Saints games, the World Cup and other sporting events. The venue hosts numerous fundraisers to give back to the community and even provides the space for fun events such as gumbo cook-offs. The Varsity Theatre often implements recurring drink specials, such as a $10 unlimited beer special with a souvenir cup. The Varsity Theatre has also been known to host a variety of private events such as holiday parties.

Varsity Theatre Baton Rouge Seating Layout

The Varsity Theatre is a fairly cozy space, offering standing room only with very limited seating on the first floor. On the second level, patrons can find more chairs and tables. Both floors afford a view of the stage, so despite the intimate space, it's easy to post up somewhere with a great view.

Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Venture out into Louisiana's historic capital to explore some of the city's most beloved cultural fixtures, such as the USS Kidd, a World War II-era Navy destroyer that offers onboard tours. For those who are more fans of architecture than naval vessels, the Old State Capitol of Louisiana is a gorgeous building featuring exquisite stained glass and elegant grounds. The Capitol offers free tours to visitors. Later, take advantage of Varsity Theatre's proximity to Louisiana State University and get tickets to see a college football game at LSU's Tiger Stadium, joining a mob of up to 90,000 exuberant fans.

Trivia

The Varsity Theatre is the neighborhood's oldest continually operating business, dating all the way back to 1937 when it first opened its doors as an early movie theatre.
