''The UNLV Rebels got its start back in 1968. That's fairly late for a Division I school, but it fits in neatly with the rapid development of Las Vegas during that era. Since then, the team has made a big impact, both in the football world and in popular culture. The UNLV Rebels count ESPN anchor Kenny Mayne and hip-hop mogul Suge Knight among its former players. On the field, the team has become known for its exciting style of play. Starting off as a Division II Independent team, the Rebels quickly moved up in the world. By 1978, just a decade into its existence, it was playing Division I Independent ball. Throughout its history, UNLV has played in four bowl games. The team has a record of 2-2, including one forfeit in 1984. As a Division II team, it also participated in the Grantland Rice Bowl one year, facing off against the University of Delaware. StubHub is the place to find tickets to all UNLV Rebels games.'
'The team plays its home games at Sam Boyd Stadium in Whitney, Nev. The stadium seats 35,500 people. The venue is named for entrepreneur Sam Boyd, who helped build the hotel and casino industries in the Las Vegas area. In addition to football games, this venue hosts sports like soccer and polo. Concerts by bands including the Grateful Dead have also been held at Sam Boyd.'
'UNLV is led by coach Tony Sanchez. Sanchez joined the team in 2014. Before that, he coached high school football at Bishop Gorman in Summerlin, Nev. Bishop Gorman is known for its excellent football program, and many graduates go on to play in the NFL. Sanchez has been the head coach at UNLV since 2015.'
'In 2018, the Rebels had a rocky season, going 4-8 overall. In-conference, the team posted just two wins and six losses. It finished in fifth place ahead of the last-place San Jose State Spartans.'
'
The 2019 UNLV Rebels will kick off the season on August 31, playing Southern Utah. The team's schedule also includes matchups with
Arkansas State
, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, San Diego State and
Hawaii
. Games against Hawaii are favorites with UNLV players, especially when they get to travel Aloha Stadium.
''
The most famous player to emerge from the UNLV Rebels roster is Randall Cunningham. Playing quarterback from 1981-1984, he went on to play for the
Philadelphia Eagles
and Minnesota Vikings for 16 years. Cunningham's number has been retired by the UNLV Rebels. Other luminaries to play at UNLV include Dominique Dorsey, Joe Denton and Glenn Carano. Standouts from the 2018 squad include quarterback Armani Rogers, who is returning for the 2019 season. Linebackers Gabe McCoy and Javin White are also expected to make a big impact.
''UNLV has a growing fanbase. The school is always taking steps to improve the fan experience at home games. It offers mobile app rewards and other innovative incentives for students and fans. The UNLV marching band is also a big part of the game day experience. With more than 100 members, the band has real presence when it takes the field before the game and at halftime.'
