United Palace Theatre
The United Palace is the fourth largest theater in all of Manhattan. Opened in 1930, it was originally a Wonder Theatre, one of five flagship venues by the Loews Corporation. The Wonder Theatres showed movies and hosted vaudeville acts. Being a flagship, the United Palace was intended to shock and inspire with its terra-cotta interior depicting Indo-Euro-African motifs in relief. Like the
Apollo Theatre
and the
Beacon Theatre
, the United Palace enjoys a long and storied reputation as a major performance venue outside of Manhattan's Theater District proper. The theater boasts a colorful past as a film/television shooting location and a church. Fusing culture and spirituality, the United Palace hosts weekly inclusive spiritual services, talks and musical concerts, drawing headliners like
Elvis Costello
and
Bon Iver
