Most people will remember UMBC and forever associate them with one magical Friday night in March 2018. The Retrievers made basketball history by becoming the first 16th seed in NCAA Tournament history to beat a No. 1 seed when they crushed the
University of Virginia
75-54 in an absolute shocker. For one weekend, UMBC became a household name in the country and had legions of fans rooting them on in March Madness. Although the Retrievers lost their second-round game, they are now forever etched into the national basketball consciousness. While the country remembers one game, UMBC has now emerged as a perennial contender in the American East Conference as the school's notoriety now gives it extra credibility in the recruiting hotbed of Greater Baltimore. The team has joined the

at the upper echelons of the conference. Get your Maryland Baltimore County basketball tickets at StubHub today and don't miss the action.
''Ryan Odom took over as coach before the 2016-17 season and immediately turned around a program that had been struggling for years. By the time Odom was in his second year on the job, the Retrievers were the conference champion. While Odom would be greatly in demand by other programs and is a hot coaching commodity, he has expressed his loyalty to UMBC and continues to remain at the school to build the program.'
'After years of playing at the Retrievers Athletic Center, UMBC moved into a new arena in the middle of the 2018 season. The new home, the UMBC Events Center, is a state-of-the-art building that seats roughly 5,000 spectators and helps contribute to the momentum that the program has been building under Coach Odom.'
'UMBC has two different sets of rivals. The school is part of the bustling Baltimore basketball scene and will play early-season games against rivals such as Towson University and Loyola. In the America East Conference, UMBC has established a strong rivalry with the University of Vermont. Now that the two schools are at the top of the conference, they have had frequent matchups in the America East Conference Championship game.'
'The Retrievers finished the 2018-19 season with a 21-13 record. UMBC came within one game of making their way back to the NCAA Tournament for the second season in a row. However, the Retrievers fell short against the University of Vermont in the America East Conference Tournament championship game. This gave Vermont the automatic bid to March Madness.'
'Perhaps the greatest player in UMBC basketball history was Jarius Lyles, who led the team that beat Virginia in the upset. Lyles is the second leading scorer in program history, just behind Larry Simmons, who played for the school from 1986-1990. The most famous UMBC player is certainly K.J. Maura who was the feisty and diminutive point guard who played a key role in the upset.'
'UMBC plays in the America East Conference, which consists of nine members including the Retrievers. UMBC joined the conference in 2003 after stints in the Big South Conference and the Northeast Conference. America East consists of teams in the northeast such as Vermont and the University of New Hampshire. The Retrievers have won two conference titles in their time in the league.'
