''The UMass Minutemen, then known as the Aggies, played its first football game in 1879 against Amherst. UMass won 4–0. The team played in the Athletic League of New England States until 1922. After a period as an independent team, the Minutemen joined the Yankee Conference in 1947. The team won or shared the Yankee Conference championship 17 times before joining the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1997. UMass won the Atlantic 10 Conference title four times. In 2007, the team took the Colonial Athletic Association title. The Minutemen has played in two bowl games and won the Boardwalk Bowl against UC Davis in 1972. Since Lou Bush in 1930, more than 70 UMass players have been named All-American, and two Minutemen are in the College Football Hall of Fame. To date, UMass has sent 26 players to the NFL draft. ''Many of the UMass Minutemen football traditions revolve around the Minuteman Marching Band, which is known as The Power and Class of New England. The band plays before and after every game and puts on a halftime show at home games. UMass has two alma maters and two fight songs. The Colonial Honor Guard celebrates Massachusetts colonial militia heritage. Sam the Minuteman is the UMass mascot.'
'Tailgating starts four hours before home games in Parking Lots 11 and 22 outside of McGuirk Stadium. The street between the two lots is known as MinuteFan Way and features bounce houses, concessions, mini-golf, face painting, alumni tents and live entertainment.'
'The oldest UMass Minutemen football rivalry is with the UConn Huskies. The two teams first met in 1897 when both squads were known as the Aggies. UMass won the first competition 36–0. The rivalry has continued through 73 games, and the score is currently 37–34 in favor of UMass. The UMass Minutemen won the last encounter with UConn 22–17. UMass also has a rivalry with Boston College that is more than 100 years old. The teams have met 26 times, but UMass has won only five of those games.'
