'The UMass Minutemen, then known as the Aggies, played its first football game in 1879 against Amherst. UMass won 4–0. The team played in the Athletic League of New England States until 1922. After a period as an independent team, the Minutemen joined the Yankee Conference in 1947. The team won or shared the Yankee Conference championship 17 times before joining the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1997. UMass won the Atlantic 10 Conference title four times.
