The University of Massachusetts men's basketball program is one of the strongest in the Atlantic 10 Conference, and it's looking to make a run in the
NCAA Tournament
this season. This is the school that produced such superstars as Julius Dr. J Erving and Marcus Camby, and you can be part of the action by attending a home game at the 10,500-seat
William D. Mullins Memorial Center
in Amherst, Mass., or by traveling to see the Minutemen play an away game. Superstar Coach John Calipari got his big break at UMass, but that tenure ended in a scandal that many still associate with the program. The Minutemen are ready to prove themselves on the hard court this season with big out-of-conference match-ups and within the steadily improving A-10. If you're a fan of college basketball, you'll have a hard time beating the experience of a UMass home game when teams like VCU or George Mason are visiting. The 2019-2020 Minutemen are led by 6-foot-1-inch senior guard Davonte Higginbottom and 6-foot-10-inch graduate student center Djery Baptiste. It's a young team with 10 freshmen or sophomores on the 14-man roster. The program is especially excited to see the development of 6-foot-9-inch freshman center Tre Mitchell, 6-foot-4-inch freshman guard T.J. Weeks and 6-foot-9-inch junior forward Dibaji Walker, who transferred in from
Cleveland State
before the 2019-2020 season.

Officially, the UMass Minutemen basketball team has never advanced past the
Elite Eight
of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The 1995-1996 team, though, did advance to the Final Four. That squad finished the season with a 35-2 record, leading the nation in win percentage and going 15-1 in conference play, eventually losing to the
Kentucky Wildcats
in the Final Four. The Executive Committee of the NCAA, though, vacated UMass's tournament wins and losses for that season because superstar Marcus Camby was found to have accepted improper gifts from agents.

The UMass Minutemen basketball program has played in a few different conferences since it was established before the 1925-1926 season. The team joined the Yankee Conference in 1946 and stayed with that conference until the end of the 1975-1976 season. The Minutemen played for one season in the Eastern Collegiate Basketball League before transitioning to the Eastern Athletic Association for the 1977-1978 season. Following five seasons in the EAA, the Minutemen joined the
Atlantic 10
, where it remains, playing conference games against teams like
George Washington University
,
Duquesne
,
Saint Joseph's
,
George Mason
, La Salle,
Dayton
, Saint Louis University,
VCU
and the
University of Rhode Island
.

The biggest and most natural rival for UMass basketball was always the
UConn Huskies
, but the teams stopped playing each other so often when UMass found strength under John Calipari. Currently, the biggest rivalry games are against Rhode Island, which are at Rhode Island on Feb. 4, 2020, and at UMass to finish the regular season March 7, 2020. Another big rivalry game is against VCU at home Feb. 26, 2020.
