Roth was born in Dusseldorf, West Germany in 1954 and grew up with a love of music. He formed several bands during his youth and in 1973, Roth was recruited to join the heavy metal band The Scorpions. During his time with Scorpions, Roth served as the lead guitarist, main songwriter and occasional vocalist for the band and helped the band develop a large fan base around the world. Roth left the band in the late '70s and went on to form the band Electric Sun and then later launched a successful career as a solo artist.

After wrapping up his work with Electric Sun, Roth embarked on a new path in his career and started off his work as a solo artist by composing four symphonies and two concertos and playing shows with symphonies across Europe. He has also gone on to release albums as a solo artist and has been praised for his work. In 2003, Roth released the album Metamorphisis which reinterprets Vivaldi's Four Seasons. His latest album was released in 2013 and is titled Scorpions Revisited. The album features many of the songs from Roth's time in the Scorpions and features the songs Longing for Fire, Sun in my Mind and Polar Nights.
