The US Men’s National Soccer Team is one of the most historic in the sport. In fact, it played in one of the first
World Cup
matches, a 3-0 win over Belgium on July 13, 1930. Its primary focus today remains qualifying for and competing at that competition. Qualifying for the 2022 edition, which will be hosted by Qatar, starts in September 2020 and will last until the last half of 2021. The squad competes in other competitions and plays a series of friendlies throughout the year as well. Fans of the game also enjoy the cultural variety that they get to experience in US matches. Not only do these games bring fans together from across the country, but the opponents also bring a flair to the contests that generally do not exist at other major sports events in the US. Mexico
is unquestionably the biggest rival for the US Men’s National Soccer Team. Even friendly matches between these neighboring countries result in a lot of tension and competitiveness. These teams also regularly compete for regional honors as they’ve combined to take 14 of the 15 Gold Cups that have been played. Mexico has lifted that trophy eight times while the Americans have done so on six occasions. The only other team to do so is another of the team’s rivals:
Canada
. Although the rivalry with Canada has historically been one-sided with the Americans dominating it, a 2-0 win for Canada over the US on Oct. 15, 2019, showed that the Canadians want to make it more competitive. The US has also formed a rivalry with
Costa Rica
. That began with heated exchanges between the teams during the 2014 World Cup qualifying. Even playing in a blizzard in Commerce City, Colo., didn’t cool that tension.
A discussion of the US Men’s National Soccer Team’s all-time greats must include Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan. They are atop the all-time goal-scoring list with 57 strikes apiece. Dempsey scored his 57th in a 2-0 win over Costa Rica in the 2017 Gold Cup semifinals, and he retired with that career goal total. Cobi Jones deserves a mention too. He has more appearances with the US Men’s National Team of any player with 164. He was also a member of the team’s 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cup teams. Between the sticks, few compare with Kasey Keller. He recorded a record of 47 clean sheets.
In some countries, the Men’s National Soccer Team plays all or nearly all its home matches in its largest city or its capital. That is not the case for the US Men’s National Soccer Team, which travels to various venues across the country. In 2019, the team played in front of US Men’s National Soccer Team ticket holders in Arizona, California, Florida, Texas, District of Columbia, Ohio, Minnesota, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Illinois, New Jersey and Missouri.
No, but the team did advance to the semifinals in the 1930 edition of this competition. However, it later experienced a dry stretch of not qualifying for the showcase event in this sport between 1950-90. It then qualified for every addition through the 2014 event before falling short of the 2018 gathering.
The US Men’s National Soccer Team has played between 17-20 matches every year since 2015 except for the World Cup-less year of 2018. During those 12 months, the squad played 11 times.
