'About Tsai Chin'

'

Evergreen Taiwanese singer Tsai Chin (or Cai Qin, as she is known to her Taiwanese fans) is a noted folk and pop singer. She sings in both Taiwanese Hokkien and Mandarin Chinese, and she is renowned for her naturally rich, magnetic singing voice and witty persona. She is a stunner known not just for her looks, but for her seductive and powerful voice that has brought her more than 30 years of success.

Tsai's records Golden Voice and Tsai Chin Live 2007 were among the ten most popular Mandarin albums in 2007, as determined by the Hong Kong branch of IFPI. She was hugely popular in Taiwan from the late '70s to the mid-'90s, and she is still a household name in Mainland China.

'Previous Hits'

Tsai Chin's greatest hits include The Spirit of Your Eyes, Reading You, The Last Night, Just Like Your Tenderness, and The Forgotten Time. She continues to give critically acclaimed concerts, including a pair of performances in July of 2015.

Tsai's first performance in July of 2015 set her apart from divas such as Jolin Tsai, A-Mei, and the late Anita Mui who dazzle audiences with a formidable stage presence, powerful ballads, and fast dance songs. Tsai Chin, on the other hand, needs only her impressive pipes, her trusty microphone, and a backing band to blow her listeners away. Her audience at The Star Theatre in Singapore was predominantly middle-aged, but everyone got goosebumps when the 57-year-old singer started serenading the crowd with covers of famous songs from her youth, such as Waiting, First Love Girl, and Mystery Woman. Tsai did a superb job of singing her original and emotive renditions song songs by Feng Fei Fei, Teresa Teng, and the late Anita Mui. Tsai breathed life back into these timeless classics, such as Applause, The Moon Represents My Heart, and Intimate Lover. One reason why the show was so enjoyable, even though most of the songs she performed were popular four decades ago, was the fact that she stopped to give introductory context to almost every selection in her set. Knowing why some lyrics deserve special attention, why some songs were composed in a specific way, or why Tsai chose to sing them at all made every tune come alive. It was as if each song was a beautifully-written story told by a masterful storyteller. Another highlight of the concert was how much fun Tsai was having onstage. The artist was full of praise for herself, and made her crew turn a fan on her so that her gown could billow as she sang. Tsai even made the entire audience sing along. She gently teased their weak voices and she made them sing the chorus to Read You over and over again until she was satisfied. After Tsai had performed the biggest hits from her impressive 30-year career, she told the crowd that she no longer sang only with her voice, but with her soul and life and every fiber of her being. The audience's reaction was a clear indication that they will return to hear her sing again and again.

For Tsai's second concert that month, she astounded her audience in a shimmering purple dress, which proved her to be slimmer and more striking than ever before. As the 57-year-old informed the audience of 5,000, her looks are improving with age. She kicked things off with an upbeat song called Auspicious Signs, which represented the theme of the concert. It was indeed a good sign of things to come. For almost three hours, Tsai pleased and teased the baby boomer audience. A skilled and charismatic entertainer, Tsai did not limit herself to singing. She told the crowd her life's stories, she made them laugh, and she once again made them sing along. Above all, she left them wanting more. The first segment of the concert was dedicated to oldies such as Foolishly Waiting, Falling Flower, Running Water, and Mysterious Lady. Her interpretation of the forlorn Foolishly Waiting was a highlight in its haunting beauty. Tsai revealed that the song, from a 1966 film titled The Black and the Blue, was one of the most popular tunes when she was a child. The concert's second segment was dedicated to some of the biggest Chinese pop stars from the '70s and '80s. She paid tribute to A Thousand Words and The Moon Represents My Heart by Teresa Teng, Applause and I'm a Cloud by Feng Fei Fei, and Intimate Lover by Anita Mui. When she made the audience sing along, she joked about the difficulty of this feat given that her voice is neither female nor male, low nor high. It's hard to do justice to the legendary Feng and Teng, but Tsai gave every ounce of soul and sass she possessed to outdo these great singers. Tsai's evocative low voice is unforgettable and unmistakable. Before she performed Deep in the Courtyard, she revealed that the legendary Taiwanese hitmaker and songwriter Liu Chia-chang once said that a voice like Tsai's appears only once in a century.
