Since 1968, Tower of Power has been bringing its trademark brand of horn-centered jazz-funk to audiences worldwide. Going through many incarnations over the years, the most well-known lead vocalist of the band was
Lenny Williams
, who played with the band during its breakout period of 1973 to 1974. By 1970, the band had taken on several new players and released its debut album,
East Bay Grease
. Its first single, Sparkling in the Rain, introduced the band to local audiences over multiple radio stations of differing genres. Since then, eight Tower of Power songs have hit the
Billboard Hot 100
.
''
Tower of Power's genesis came in 1968 when saxophonists Emilio Castillo and Stephen Kupka met and formed the band known as the Motowns. The band began playing shows around Northern California and changed its name to Tower of Power when Castillo feared it would never get a gig in San Francisco, Calif., at Bill Graham's
Fillmore Auditorium
with the previous name. The succession of players who followed helped launch the band to critical acclaim. It would go on to the release of 19 studio albums, seven live albums and six compilation albums.
