Toronto Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays are Canada’s MLB team. In 1992 the Blue Jays became the first non-U.S. team to win the World Series, and they took the championship again in 1993, something only 13 other MLB teams have accomplished. The Jays have struggled in recent seasons and management gutted much of the roster in 2024, stating the focus for 2025 is on “competing and contending”. Blue Jays fans are ready for big things next season.

About the Toronto Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays are the fifth youngest franchise in the Major Leagues and the only Canadian team. Founded in 1976, the Toronto Blue Jays have won 6 division titles, 2 American League Pennants, and appeared in 2 World Series games, winning both Championships, back-to-back, in 1992 and 1993. Fans have mixed opinions on who the Jays biggest division rivals are since Detroit left for the AL Central, but most agree it’s the Tampa Bay Rays.

Toronto Blue Jays FAQs:

Where do the Toronto Blue Jays play?

The Toronto Blue Jays play at Rogers Centre, which opened just half a kilometre from the shores of Lake Ontario, in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1989, and has a seating capacity of 49,286. Originally known as the Skydome, the venue was the first stadium built with a fully retractable roof. Constructed at the foot of the famous CN Tower, the Skydome dramatically altered Toronto’s lakeside city skyline. The circular exterior of Rogers Centre is plain, with walls of concrete and glass windows, but looks impressive outside when the dome is lit up at night, in conjunction with the CN Tower. Inside the park has been called “warehouse-like” when the roof is closed, but when open, it’s quite beautiful, surrounded by downtown Toronto with the CN Tower in full view. Rogers Centre was originally designed as a multi-purpose stadium for both MLB baseball and CFL football, ultimately making it imperfect for both. The Toronto Argonauts football team moved to a new playing field in 2016, and Rogers Centre is currently undergoing a series of projects focused on updating the fan experience and transforming the venue into a world class ballpark. The first round of renovations kicked off the 2023 season in a big way. There were significant field-level changes completed including raised bullpens, new outfield walls with adjusted dimensions, and the right field seats were moved closer to the action. Left and right balconies were added at the 100 level with prime bullpen views and new bleacher seats in the outfield add an old-school ballpark feel. Most interesting is the way the franchise has revamped the fan experience by creating a new Outfield District featuring 5 different “neighborhoods”, like the Rooftop Patio with live music and a summer feel, or Park Social, with picnic tables, games and comfortable spaces to watch the game. The neighborhoods are available to anyone with a ticket and there are new “outfield district” discounted tickets that don’t have an assigned seat, but let you wander and watch the game from the different neighborhood viewpoints. This is just the start of a complete redesign of Rogers Centre that is intended to transform the ballpark for years to come. If you’re visiting Toronto for a game consider splurging on a room at the Toronto Marriot City Centre Hotel, the only hotel located right inside an MLB stadium. Watching a game from your field view hotel suite is an incredible experience like no other in sports. And for those attending from over the border, a favorable exchange rate makes going to the game a little easier on the wallet. Especially on promotion days like Loonie Tuesday where a hot dog is just $1 CAD!

Toronto Blue Jays Fan Life

The Toronto Blue Jays are the only MLB franchise in Canada and they have fans from coast to coast, across the country. Although fans in some provinces may also cheer for ball teams in close proximity, such as Vancouver for the Seattle Mariners, or Windsor for the Detroit Tigers, the Jays are a national favorite. There are also a lot of Blue Jays fans in Florida. The Jays have had a Spring Training home in Dunedin for over 40 years and their Single-A team is also located in Dunedin. For many MLB cities, their team is part of their civic pride and though that’s certainly true for the Jays fans who live in Toronto, this is a team that benefits from the love of an entire country. Blue Jays fans have been called “polite” and in fact when the Jays won back-to-back World Series championships, more than a quarter of a million fans flooded the streets in downtown Toronto, exuberant and wild, but without major incident. Perhaps the most famous Blue Jays fan today is Home Plate Lady. She has been a fixture in the seats behind home plate at almost every home game for over 15 years and is known for her facial expressions during games. The Jays have struggled in recent seasons and, polite or not, Jays fans have a lot to say about it. They’re critical of management’s choices and point to what is one of the worst ranked farm systems in the league. The Rogers Centre was beautifully revamped with the fan experience in mind for the 2023 season and is a fun place to watch a game with this easy-going fan base.Buy Toronto Blue Jays tickets on StubHub and get out to experience the excitement yourself.

Fun fact about the Toronto Blue Jays...

The current “hockey-style” catchers mask was invented in Canada by Toronto Blue Jay, Charlie O’Brien, and debuted at the “Skydome” in Toronto in September of 1996. Charlie O’Brien may not be remembered for his hitting skills, but he was a fantastic defensive catcher, and pitchers felt confident when O’Brien was behind the plate. But what he may be most remembered for in the years to come, is his innovation of a new, safer, catcher’s mask. The first catcher known to wear a mask was Havard’s Alexander Tyng in 1877. It was a converted fencing mask and in the years that followed the 2-piece catcher mask design didn’t change a great deal, other than extra padding and better straps. Stats show that MLB catchers experience more concussions than any other baseball position. O’Brien was frustrated by the pain and disorienting effect of getting hit in the face with 90-mph balls. While watching NHL hockey one night, he noticed how getting hit in the face with a puck didn’t seem to faze the goalies much. He started wondering how to incorporate some of the goalie mask design into a new baseball catchers mask. O’Brien worked with a company in Hamilton, just outside of Toronto, called Van Velden Mask Inc. to bring his idea to life. The main inspiration borrowed from the hockey goalie mask’s construction was the use of multi-layered fiberglass and Kevlar. O’Brien’s new catcher’s mask design increased overall protection to the sides and back of the head to protect against wild pitch injuries or home plate collisions, while also increasing the catcher's overall vision so that it didn’t need to be removed in order to catch a pop-up. The MLB approved his design in September 1996 and the following season other catchers began to switch over to the new hockey-style catcher's mask. Today, approximately 30% of catchers wear Charlie O’Brien’s hockey-style mask. It’s an interesting full circle, because the very first masks worn by hockey goalies were based on baseball catchers' masks!
