Tom Cochrane tour dates

Tom Cochrane rose to fame in the '80s as the lead singer of the rock group Red Rider, but it's the singer-songwriter's career as a solo artist - now almost three decades strong - that has garnered the Canadian his biggest successes. A mastery of heartland rock motifs, and songwriting that embraces the universal themes of everyday life, have made Cochrane a bona fide superstar in his home country. Stateside, he is best known for his hit Life Is a Highway, a staple of any Tom Cochrane tour performance.

Tom Cochrane's background

In 1980, Tom Cochrane become the lead singer for Red Rider, whose debut album featured the hit single with White Hot. Red Rider (later renamed Tom Cochrane & Red Rider) went on to release more than six albums, with Cochrane responsible for most of the band's biggest hits.

Cochrane's rise to fame with Red Rider led to the 1987 re-release of a solo album, Hang On to Your Resistance, which he had originally recorded in 1974. In 1991, he released his second solo album, Mad Mad World, a big success in both Canada and the U.S. Its hits included Lunatic Fringe and Life Is a Highway, which reached the Top 5 on the pop charts.

Cochrane offered a steady series of solo albums throughout the '90s, as well as the seminal Ashes to Diamond, a three-CD box set chronicle of his Red Rider and solo songs. Two compilation albums followed in 2002: Anthology and Trapeze. In 2006, Cochrane presented a stripped-down rock 'n' roll sound with No Stranger. A new audience was introduced to Cochrane's music that same year when Rascal Flatts had a Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with a cover version of Life Is a Highway, which the musical trio recorded for the Pixar movie Cars. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Mad Mad World in 2016, Cochrane released a special edition of the album with a second disc of live recordings.
