Three Dog Night has been entertaining their fans since 1968, when they formed as a three-man group with well-attuned vocals. Cory Wells, Danny Hutton and Chuck Negron created a delightful harmonic blend that was distinctive and arresting. They produced 21
Billboard
Top 40 hit singles, three No. 1 singles, 10 Top 10 singles and 12 consecutive RIAA certified-gold albums between the years 1969 and 1975. They released covers of well-known artists like John Lennon and
Paul McCartney
, but they also covered lesser-known artists with imaginative and impressive renditions. With these releases, they provided exposure to artists like Nilsson, Laura Nyro, Hoyt Axton,
Leo Sayer
and others. Over their multi-decade history, this band has performed shows for packed audiences the world over.
Hutton came up with the idea of forming a three-man group, and he and Wells recruited Negron to join their band in 1967. They came up with the name for their band from an Australian way of describing low night temperatures in the outback: The colder the chill, the more dogs you need to sleep warmly at night. Their first No. 1 single was Mama Told Me Not to Come, written by Randy Newman. This initial hit release was followed two years later with charting singles like Joy to the World and Black and White. Hutton left the group in 1976, and the group disbanded in 1977. They reunited for a short time in 1985 but didn't achieve the same level of success as previously.
