The Wombats rolled out and into the UK's musical scene at the start of 2003. The band's angsty lyrics and poppy melodies were the perfect combination for young teens across England, making them a sensation within five years. The band's music is surprisingly upbeat and creates an almost ironic background to the otherwise sardonic content of its songs. The band's second album,
This Modern Glitch
, was released seven years after the band's debut, and it has since solidified them as a band with substantial fan backing. In spite of its commercial success, The Wombats have been known to frequent smaller venues and clubs around the world in addition to performing at renowned festivals like the
Austin City Limits
in Austin, Texas.
Dan Haggis, Tord Øverland Knudsen and Matthew Murphy met while studying at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. They quickly bonded over their love of music and their desire to make it big. The trio began touring around the UK and eventually took to international stages over the next five years with the band's sophomore album,
This Modern Glitch
, appearing on the top charts in the UK. More recently, the band's music has made it to the
Billboard
Top 200. In the band's relatively short career, The Wombats have appeared on late-night shows, its music has been featured in commercials for airlines and the band has enjoyed serious touring success.
As you might imagine, The Wombats concert tickets go quickly. Fortunately, it is easy to secure a seat for one of the band's shows. StubHub, the world's largest and most well-known ticket marketplace, is one of the safest ways to guarantee that you will be able to witness the magic of The Wombats firsthand at one of its shows.
This Modern Glitch
is the album that really put the band on the map back in 2010. This earlier album packs a serious punch by featuring some of the band's catchier hits like Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves).
Glitterbug
is also a must-listen album that features songs of a similar nature, but with more refined musical backing. It was also the band's first album to make it to the charts in the US.
When touring, The Wombats tend to be promoting the band's most recent album, so you can expect to hear a number of newer singles sprinkled throughout any given show. In addition, the band always plays a few of its hits. Moving to New York, Jump Into the Fog, Techno Fan, Let's Dance to Joy Division, Just Give Me a Try and Turn are all hits that you can expect to hear either during the show itself or during the encore.
The undeniable chemistry and camaraderie among the members of the band makes watching and listening to them perform an enjoyable experience. This friendship coupled with Matthew Murphy's showmanship helps make a The Wombats concert one you'll remember.
The Wombats has been nominated for three NME awards, one of which the band won in 2008 for Best Dancefloor Filler. The band was also nominated for Best Album at the XFM New Music Awards and Best UK and Ireland New Act at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards.
