Named after an order of Catholic nuns, the Sisters of Mercy took off where post-punk godfathers like Bahaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees left off. Forming in 1980, the band’s first album, First and Last and Always, became a staple for vamping youth. By 1985, tensions within the band ruptured it, forming several splinter groups, including the Mission UK and Ghost Dance.
