Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Syracuse, the Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater is the city's premier destination for the performing arts. Featuring concerts, theatrical productions, lecture series and more, this theater is an important cultural fixture in the region.
The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater was opened on January 15th, 1976. Ever since, it has served as the main stage of the Oncenter's John H. Mulroy Civic Center Theaters division.
The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater plays host to a rich variety of classical, cultural and popular performances, from lectures to opera to major concerts. It is the home of both the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and the Syracuse Opera. The theater also hosts the Rosamond Gifford Lecture Series, which has featured names such as Anthony Doerr (author of All the Light We Cannot See) and Emily St. John Mandel (author of Station Eleven). Traveling comedy acts such as Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally often grace the stage.
The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater also hosts the Famous Artists Broadway Theater Series, which brings Broadway musicals and other theater to the Syracuse community. Past shows include Les Miserables, Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera and Wicked. Finally, there are frequent popular concert events. The roster of past performers includes names such as The Goo Goo Dolls, Brit Floyd and 3 Doors Down.
The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater features 2,117 seats arranged in a continental seating style, meaning there is no central aisle. The seats are spread across three levels, featuring eight boxes on the mezzanine and six on the balcony level. Each box contains six wheeled chairs.
The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater does allow food and beverages inside during performances, including alcoholic beverages, with certain restrictions depending on the type of show.
When your show lets out at the Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater, head out to explore the rest of Syracuse. Take a stroll through the Rosamond Gifford Zoo or explore the exhibits at the Erie Canal Museum or the Museum of Science and Technology. Visitors who happen to be in town at the right time of year shouldn't miss the opportunity to check out the Great New York State Fair, a major event for the region each year. Sports fans may enjoy watching the Syracuse Chiefs, a AAA baseball team, play at NBT Bank Stadium. Those looking for other live entertainment may enjoy tickets to see one of the Broadway style musicals at the aptly-named Landmark Theatre, a theater listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
