For the first time, the epic story of Lehman Brothers unfolds live on the stage. Conceived by the Italian dramatist Stefano Massini,
The Lehman Trilogy
covers the 163-year history of the infamous financial institution, from its original founding by Bavarian immigrants to its sudden collapse in the financial crisis of 2008. Over three separate acts, the play explores multiple generations of Lehman Brothers patriarchs as they build up a financial giant against the backdrop of the changing American economy — a giant that became synonymous with financial malfeasance.
The Lehman Trilogy
will make you reflect on the financial crisis in a new way.
Stefano Massini originally wrote
The Lehman Trilogy
in 2012 as a radio play for a local Italian station. After some positive feedback, he then developed the framework of the story into a stage play.
The Lehman Trilogy
made its worldwide debut in the French city of Saint-Etienne. Playwright Ben Power, who works for the National Theatre in London, then translated the play into English. He made significant alterations to the story and cut down on the lengthy five-hour running time. Acclaimed filmmaker Sam Mendes, who won the 1999 Best Director Oscar for
American Beauty
, took the helm as director. The English language version premiered at the
National Theatre
in July 2018. The West End production received five nominations from the 2019 Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Play, Best Director, Best Set Design, Best Sound Design and Best Actor. Following its success in London,
The Lehman Trilogy
made a brief off-Broadway appearance at the
Park Avenue Armory
in New York City where it was embraced effusively by the New York and national press. The producers then decided to bring the play directly to Broadway in 2020.

beginning March of 2020 for a special 16-week run. Opened in 1921, the Nederlander Theatre is located near the center of the Broadway Theater District in Midtown Manhattan. The
Lehman Trilogy
New York scheduled cast consists of Simon Russell Beale, Ben Miles and Adam Godley. The three actors play all characters in the story, including the original Lehman Brothers, Henry Lehman, Emanuel Lehman and Mayer Lehman, respectively.
The Lehman Trilogy
takes a minimalistic approach to storytelling. The three actors play their characters against the sparse backdrop of a set that is meant to reflect the changing nature of America at the time. The Nederlander Theatre has no specific dress code, but attendees are encouraged to wear something that is comfortable and appropriate for the occasion. Attendees must be at least 4 years old to enter.
The running time lasts approximately three hours and 20 minutes with two 15-minute intermissions.
