One of the most notorious underground bands of the 90s, The Jesus Lizard staked a reputation for utter rowdiness and fantastically demented music. With people like Kurt Cobain among its fanbase, the Chicago-based noise rock outfit had a good cult following before the band broke up in 1999. Now, the band is on its second reunion tour, and an opportunity to see them should not be passed up.
The Jesus Lizard is largely associated with Chicago, Ill., but it actually got its start in Austin, Texas, which is where David Yow and David Wm. Sims, formerly of noise rock band Scratch Acid, joined forces with guitarist Duane Denison. It wasn't until the trio moved to Chicago that the group really started to get off the ground. Famed engineer Steve Albini started working with the band at the very start of its discography, beginning with the
Pure
EP. It was after this release that Mac McNeilly came aboard as a drummer. A lasting relationship with Albini was formed, and he was behind most of its studio albums, including
Head
,
Goat
,
Liar
and
Down
.
Liar
spawned the single titled Puss, which was released as a split with Nirvana and featured the famous grunge band's song called Oh, the Guilt. The band's relationship with Albini ended before the band made its fifth album,
Shot
, which was released on major label Capitol Records along with its final album,
Blue
. During this time, Mac McNeilly departed, and subsequent drummers Jim Kimball and Brendan Murphy left as well. While the band kept touring, it ended up being cut from Capitol Records' roster in 1999. The group disbanded in June of that year. About a decade later, however, the band embarked on a reunion tour with its classic lineup. This was a very successful tour, which also included reissues of the band's first four albums and appearances at prominent festivals such as the Pitchfork Music Festival, but it ended in 2010. In 2017, The Jesus Lizard got back on the tour circuit, hitting cities such as Philadelphia and Detroit.
