The Flaming Lips began with brothers Wayne and Mark Coyne. Wayne played guitar and Mark sang. They added Michael Ivins on bass and Dave Kotska on drums to round out the band. After the band recorded its first song, The Flaming Lips, Mark Coyne left the band. Wayne took over vocals. From 1984 to 1989, the band went through some lineup changes as well as changes to its sound. In 1990, The Flaming Lips caught the attention of a Warner Records representative when he witnessed a show in the American Legion Hall in Normal, Okla., where the use of pyrotechnics almost burned down the venue. Subsequently, the group signed with Warner Brothers, releasing the band's first major album,
Hit to Death in the Future Head
, in 1992. In 1999, the album called
The Soft Bulletin
was named
NME
magazine's Album of the Year, helping fan the flames of the band's long career.

There has never been a definitive answer as to where the name The Flaming Lips came from. Some of the origin stories include a porn film, a dream where a fiery Virgin Mary planted a kiss on Wayne in the backseat of his car, a drug reference and possibly from a song that Stan Freberg sang in the 1953 film,
Geraldine
.
