About The Fixx

What started in college would ultimately transform the lives of friends Cy Curnin and Adam Woods for the rest of their lives. Originally naming themselves Portraits, Curnin and Woods were a two piece band looking for other musicians in the London area that wanted to create something new musically together. Taking out an ad in the local paper, Portraits would fill the rest of the roster with keyboardist Rupert Greenall, guitarist Tony McGrail, and bassist Russell McKenzie who would later be replaced by Charlie Barrett. Newly formed Portraits would begin to craft the music that would shape The Fixx with their first singles, Little Women, and Hazards In The Home, but it wasn't until Tony McGrail left in 1980 that guitarist Jaime West-Oram would join the group and synergize the creative and artistic talent of what was fast becoming a new band. With West-Oram in the group Portraits was no longer the band's moniker, changing the name to The Fix once they started recording with 101 Records. In these years the newly named The Fix would release their first single, Lost Planes, which would receive radio airplay for the BBC giving the band the exposure needed to move on to the next level. Gaining traction with the new line up and seeing the success that the new members were bringing to the group, MCA Records began to take notice and offered the band a record deal.

One roadblock that stood in the way for The Fix was the band's name itself; MCA thought that the name seemed to reference drug addiction and lent a negative connotation to the band with the baggage associated with the phrase. To maintain artistic integrity, the band fought with MCA Records that the name had no implications to drug-use or addiction, finally a compromise was made in changing the spelling of the name to maintain the identity of the group but still be non-descript enough for MCA Records to feel comfortable signing the group. Thus, The Fixx was born with the subtle addition of an extra X something that would iconize the group as well as allow them the use of the name they had created so long ago.

The Fixx's success would only go up as the band's newly formed packaging still held the quality of their musical talents. As of 1982 The Fixx's first album with MCA, Shuttered Room would prove to both the record company as well as the world that The Fixx were a brilliant rock group. Their first hits, Stand or Fall and Red Skies would make ground in both the US and UK pop charts and found large success in Canada with Stand or Fall reaching the top 40. In a strange turn of events, bassist Charlie Barrett, would leave the band just after finishing recording Shuttered Room and would be replaced by Alfie Agius for the tour. Sadly, Agius too would be short lived as he also left in 1983 after recording the second album Reach the Beach which would become The Fixx's most commercially successful album with hits like One Thing Leads to Another, and Saved by Zero. As the door of band members kept revolving, musically The Fixx never changed, the band would continue to retain Curnin's stellar vocals, Wood's pounding percussion, West-Oram's out of this world guitar, and Greenall's new wave synth grooves. The addition of Dan K. Brown would cement the band's line up in its most iconic and to this day has seen very little change in members aside from tour breaks or vacations. The success of Reach the Beach would spur the band on to continue to create music all the way into these recent years with their tenth latest studio album Beautiful Fiction.

Previous Hits

Most of The Fixx's hits have stayed in the minds of music fans for years, the eighties were especially kind to the London based New Wave rockers as singles, One Thing Leads to Another and Red Skies would help shape the band's iconic sound and visual presence. Stand or Fall would help the band reach the Canadian audience in a way that neither the band nor MCA Records had ever dreamed of in the initial outset of their partnership. Other hits include: 'Saved by Zero, Are We Ourselves, and A Letter to Both Sides. The groups aptitude to construct running themed albums also allowed their music to take on a longevity that very little artists have been able to replicate.

Trivia

The band's albums are all conceptually linked through similar themes and motifs given the collection an interesting story of civic rights and the state of the world.
