The idea of a record label for fresh voices and emerging artists came during the production of the documentary
Intellect
. While working on an intensive study of DJs in house and techno music, Dirtybird Records founder Claude VonStroke decided to create a label. At first, nothing was certain as he had almost no money and only a year to succeed or fail. VonStroke credits his wife with supporting him throughout the process. It was she who imposed the deadline of one year, knowing that her husband needed the motivation. Although working on the documentary helped VonStroke avoid many of the pitfalls that usually come with starting a label, most of his success came from hard work. He would gather bundles of materials to send to potential artists and include handwritten notes in each package. The idea came to fruition in 2002, and after almost 20 years later, the genre has changed for good and for the better too.
