The Constantines was initially headed up by immensely talented musicians Bryan Webb, Doug McGregor, Dallas Wehrle, and Steve Lambke. The group would rise out of the ashes of recently defunct emo band Shoulder, which was originally headed by Bryan and Doug. The band's new sound would incorporate the sounds of legendary acts such as Fugazi, Nick Cave, and the Clash, with the Constantines kicking off officially in 1999. The band would eventually relocate to Toronto, Ontario, where they began their musical career in earnest with the release of their debut self titled on the Three Gut music label. The band became an underground indie sensation as they picked up a Juno Award, and soon began touring all throughout the regional Ontario scene and added keyboardist Will Kidman to their lineup.
By 2003 the band's creative and performance juices were in full swing, and they signed onto the Sub Pop record label to record their much anticipated sophomore album. They broke out of the confines of Ontario as they began a pan Canadian tour that would eventually break into the United States music scene, releasing two more albums throughout the 00s. Various lineup shakeups would lead to speculation that the band was breaking up; this would be partially true, as the Constantines went on unofficial hiatus in 2010. While the members did not call it a breakup, it was recognized that the Constantines had lost momentum, and its various members went on to pursue their own musical side project.
The band's hiatus lasted four long years, with the band making a groundbreaking announcement in early 2014 that they were reuniting for a special ten year anniversary tour. The band rocked venues all across North America as they brought all of their spirit and musical mastery back to the stage, but the band has not yet announced intention to record a new record. Despite the secrecy surrounding any fresh Constantines material, the band continues to tour strong as they've extended their 2014 reunion tour into 2015 and beyond.

The album featured a diverse mix of fundamental Constantines tracks, including Arizona, The Long Distance Four, Young OFfenders, Steal This Sound, and Justice.
The band's 2003 follow up Shine a Light remains one of their most successful records to date, with the album again receiving rave reviews from critics including a near perfect four and a half stars from AllMusic and 8.3 out of 10 from Pitchfork Media. The album featured a laundry list of hit tracks including Shine a Light, Young Lions, Scoundrel Babes, and National Hum, with the album making Pitchfork's list of best albums of the 00s.

The band's name was derived from an episode of talk show Coast to Coast with Art Bell, which featured a ghost character named Constantine. The name stuck with the group and later became their official moniker.
The track Arizona is dedicated to former Danny and the Juniors lead singer Danny Rapp. Rapp committed suicide decades earlier in 1983.
The band occasionally performs as the group Horsey Craze, a band which exclusively plays Neil Young cover tracks.
