The American Rodeo brings together the top finishers from six other rodeos to allow them to compete against each other in the AT&T Stadium. Others who are stars in the sport are invited to compete. Still, others have the chance to compete by paying an entry fee and turning in a top performance at a qualifying event held before the main rodeo. Regardless of how they qualify, the American Rodeo is a chance to see top performers in each of the seven rodeo events perform. The event will give out over $2.35 million in prize money. Still, if an individual qualifies at the American Rodeo without advancing from another rodeo and without a reservation and wins his or her event, the athlete will earn an extra $1 million. In addition to watching top athletes perform, you will also have the opportunity to see outstanding rodeo stock from across the nation. Competing horses and cattle are carefully chosen from the top rodeo stock providers to make sure that each cowboy has his work cut out for him. Get your American Rodeo tickets at StubHub.
The top contestants at six rodeos qualify for the semi-finals. Therefore, you may see the top winners from the Northern International Livestock Exposition in Billings, Mont. You may also see contestants from the
Grand National Rodeo
in San Francisco, Calif. Contestants may also qualify if they did well at Rodeo Rapid City in Rapid City, S.D., or at the
National Western Stock Show and Rodeo
in Denver. You may see contestants who have placed well at the
San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo
, as well. Others may qualify for the semi-finals by placing well at the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo in San Angelo, Texas, or the
Dixie National Rodeo
in Jackson, Miss. Finally, contestants may qualify for the American Rodeo at
La Fiesta de los Vaqueros
in Tucson, Ariz.
The top 10 finishers from the previous year’s PRCA World Standings receive an invitation. Some rodeo professionals who have been invited to the 2020 American Rodeo include Stetson Wright, who competes in saddle bronc riding and bull riding. Another rodeo athlete who will get an invitation is Clay Smith, who competes in team roping and tie-down roping. Tuf Cooper, who competes in tie-down roping, will also receive an invitation. After finishing fourth in the PRCA World Standings in 2019, Caleb Smidt, who participates in tie-down roping, got an invitation as did Daylon Swearingen, who is a bull rider. Others who would get invitations based on their PRCA World Standings include Trevor Brazile, Rhen Richard, Landon McClaugherty, Steven Dent and Josh Frost. There is no requirement that these rodeo athletes actually participate.
Sixteen performers will be in each event on the first day of the competition. The top eight based on score or time will advance to the second day’s competition. After each event, the top four will perform again in a shootout with the highest score or fastest time being the winner of that event at the American Rodeo.
