Tape Face quickly became a fan favorite on Season 11 NBC's hit talent competition known as America's Got Talent. A classically trained mime, Tape Face's performances were simplistic, yet highly entertaining. He does not speak, as is traditional of mimes. Instead, he relies heavily on props, facial expressions and body language to induce laughter. The comedic genius made his way through the competition reaching the finals. Although he did not place in the Top 5 of the competition, he gained a large following of fans. YouTube videos of his performances quickly went viral, and a newfound interest in traditional comedy was sparked for millions of young fans who had never seen the likes of mimes and silent acts in their lifetimes. Tape Face background

Prior to his first audition on America's Got Talent, Tape Face went by the longer stage name of The Boy With Tape On His Face. He shortened it to Tape Face for the competition and has now adopted the stage name on a permanent basis. Despite the name change, Tape Face is a stage character and persona created and portrayed by Sam Willis. The character became a regular skit for Willis in 2008 after he debuted the act at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. It was so well-received that Willis continued to portray the mime. He has performed at numerous events through his native New Zealand, including performing for the Prime Minister. Prior to gaining international recognition on America's Got Talent, Willis had won several awards for his act, such as Pulp Comedy's Best New Face Award in 2001, the Best Marketing Award at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival in 2002 and the Billy T Award in 2005. Meanwhile in 2008, he was honored with a People's Choice Award at the World Buskers Festival. He continued to have great success with his acts in the years leading up to his international debut on America's Got Talent.

In 2016, Tape Face hit the stage on AGT. Initially, the judges were taken back by the tape on Willis' face and the fact that he did not speak prior to the audition. After his performance began, the audience as well as the judges were captivated. The performance included Tape Face using hand puppets to perform the hit duet Endless Love by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. Other shows put on by Tape Face during the competition consisted of a staple gun duel with an audience member and a lively and romantic dance to Lady in Red, with Tape Face portraying both a man and woman. Although he did not win, he has continued to be successful after the competition. Tape Face tickets are in high demand as he aims to bring back a more simplistic comedic style.
