Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays are still a young franchise who took some time to find their footing before exploding into postseason wins during 2008. They’re known for having a strong farm team and fans are patiently looking to the future. They’re hoping that the current team rebuild, and a new home set to open in 2028, will help propel the Rays to their first World Series championship, within this decade!

Where do the Tampa Bay Rays play?

The Tampa Bay Rays play at Tropicana Field, which opened near Tampa Bay, in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1998, and has a baseball seating capacity of 25,025. There is a sand and sea vibe throughout Tropicana Field, beginning outside with the building’s sand colored walls and blue base. The largest outdoor tile mosaic in Florida, a 1,000-foot-long walkway featuring rays, sea turtles and other sea creatures, leads to the beautiful eight-story rotunda entrance, modeled after the one at Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field. “The Trop” is the only non-retractable, domed stadium in the MLB. The teflon-coated fiberglass roof is angled to reduce cooling costs, helps protect against hurricanes, and it glows orange after a Rays win. But inside, the roof structure has been widely criticized. The 4 catwalks that support the dome roof have obstructed hits and turned home runs into ground-rule doubles, and the light roof color makes it harder for outfielders to see balls in the air. The beach theme continues inside with blue stadium seats that undulate like waves across the top rows. A yellow seat in center field commemorates the very first home run hit for the Rays franchise, by Wade Boggs in 1998. Close by, a second yellow seat marks the spot where homer number 3,000 for Boggs hit, in 1999. Fans can walk around the 360-degree walkway on the main concourse to see the game from different vantage points. Behind the batter's eye is an area, known as The Porch, which offers open seating and standing room to watch games. Beyond The Porch is the indoor/outdoor Ballpark & Rec party deck with specialty drinks, skee-ball, arcade games, giant beer pong and more, along with a fantastic view of downtown St. Petersburg. There are multiple, reservable party sections available for groups. The famous Stingray exhibit, in partnership with the Florida Aquarium, is an educational experience open to fans before the game, in limited numbers. Don’t miss the Ted Williams Museum and Hitters Hall of Fame. Beyond recognizing the history of the game's best hitters, it’s a wonderful museum of baseball history, including the Negro Leagues, the All-American Girls League, and even an exhibit dedicated to Canadian baseball. If you’re bringing the family, there’s fun for kids of all ages, from carnival games to video games, batting cages and speed pitch testers. Tampa Bay is known for craft beer and The Trop has a good selection of local craft beers, and popular food options like the St. Petersburg-style Cuban sandwich. It’s also one of only 2 ballparks in the Majors that features a cigar bar. Despite some fun amenities and many rounds of upgrades, this is a much maligned ballpark that has seen better days. In 2023 the team announced plans to build a new ballpark adjacent to the current stadium as part of an ambitious redevelopment of the Historic Gas Plan District. The development will include affordable housing, a hotel, office, retail and medical spaces, plus a library and a concert venue. The Rays franchise says that their new home will be one of the most intimate and inviting ballparks in the MLB.

Who are the Tampa Bay Rays best players currently?

Notable current Tampa Bay Rays players include infielder Yandy Díaz who won the AL batting title in 2023 and went on a 20-game hitting streak in June 2024, the longest streak in Rays history; outfielder Josh Lowe has been solid offensively and behind the bat, hitting multiple game homers and the first four-hit game of his career in August 2024; and pitcher Zack Littell who shifted from reliever to the starting rotation during 2023, has shown up with dominant performances in 2024.

Tampa Bay Rays Fan Life

The Tampa Bay Rays have far more fan support than the attendance numbers at Tropicana Field would suggest. The Tampa Bay area is filled with Rays fans and you’ll see hats and jerseys all over St. Petersburg. They are one of the two youngest franchises in the Major Leagues, so the fan base is less established overall and there are a lot of attractions in the Tampa Bay area that compete for people’s attention. Attendance numbers have rarely been good for the Rays. During their wildcard playoff run in October 2023, the Rays had the lowest attended postseason game of any MLB team in the last 104 years. But that’s more an indictment against the stadium and the ownership, who fans say don’t hold onto their best players. There’s a lot of excitement among fans about the new state-of-the-art ballpark and development that promises to breathe new life into the community while boosting the Tampa Bay Rays home game atmosphere and appeal. Fans might not be making the trek to The Trop these days, but they are definitely invested in the team overall. The Rays have a strong farm system that’s ranked best in the MLB for 2024 and fans are already talking about the roster rebuild with a “we’ll get ‘em next year” mentality. This seems to be an “if you build it, they will come” moment for the Tampa Bay Rays and it will be interesting to see attendance numbers when the new ballpark is completed in 2028. Buy Tampa Bay Rays tickets on StubHub and go see this version of Tropicana Field, while you can!

Fun fact about the Tampa Bay Rays...

The Tampa Bay Rays were known as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays from their inception in 1998 until their name change that kicked off the 2008 season. Devil Rays are found in the waters of the Tampa Bay area, but the team’s owners faced a decade of fuss and phone calls from religious fans and local pastors lamenting the word “devil” and saying it offended them to hear it in the team’s name. When new ownership took over in 2007, they were considering a name change anyway to leave behind a decade of franchise difficulties, a miserable win-loss record of 645-972 with no postseason appearances. Though the religious faction saw it as exorcising the devil, the truth is that the updated name was meant to symbolize the sunny rays of the Tampa Bay area, as represented by the sun flare on the new uniforms. Armed with a new name, the Tampa Bay Rays went on to have their first winning season, taking the AL East championship and winning their first American League pennant. The Rays still maintain their original connection to the sea, with the famous Rays Touch Tank attraction at Tropicana Field.
