'About Suzy Bogguss'

'

Before her ascension in the music charts in the 1990s, performing music was the furthest thing from Bogguss’ mind. While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Art at Illinois State University, she started hanging out at local coffeehouses with friends. After graduation in 1980, she dusted off the 12-string guitar she’d bought with babysitting money as a teenager and hit the road for five years as a busker, traveling in a camper to share her acoustic sound in taverns across the country.

Suzy Bogguss finally settled down in Nashville in the late 1980s with husband and songwriter Doug Crider and began to take her music seriously, performing in local venues. It wasn’t until she sang as a headliner at Dollywood, an amusement park nestled in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, that a talent scout from Capitol Records heard her crystal-clear voice and recognized her star power.

Her debut album, Somewhere Between (1989), connected with fans who loved the diverse musical approach - a blend of traditional country covers with songs that reflected the fresh Nashville sound emerging at the time. The Academy of Country Music named her 1989’s Top New Female Vocalist. Her next two albums, Aces and Voices in the Wind, earned her stardom as an acclaimed female country music artist.

It wasn’t long before Bogguss began experimenting with other musical styles. She contributed a cover of the Eagles’ “Take it to the Limit” on Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles, which won a CMA Award for Album of the Year. She also performed “All My Loving” on Come Together: America Salutes the Beatles, which garnered a Grammy nomination. Her cover of Stephen Foster’s “Ah, May the Red Rose Live Always” appears on the Grammy Award-winning album Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster.

Her recent album, Lucky, is a collection of Merle Haggard songs she’s made her own, such as “Today I Started Loving You Again,” “The Bottle Let Me Down” and “Silver Wings.”
