With the first game played on Jan. 1, 1935, the Sugar Bowl is a long-running college football playoff game held in New Orleans. The Sugar Bowl is the second-oldest bowl game in the NCAA behind the Rose Bowl. The bowl game originated in Tulane Stadium before moving to the Superdome in 1975. The Sugar Bowl has a long-running connection with the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and in the first 60 bowl games there were only 4 times where an SEC team was not featured. Since 2014 the Sugar Bowl has been part of the New Year's Six playoff rotation alongside the Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Peach and Rose Bowls as part of the Bowl Championship Series that hosts College Football Playoffs. In 2024 the College Football Playoffs expanded to 12 teams and the Sugar Bowl will now be a yearly feature of those playoffs. Before 2014, the top five games in NCAA college football were selected though the Bowl Championship Series while the other bowls outside of the system had contracts with specific conferences to offer bids. If the teams were eligible for a bowl game, they had an opportunity to be selected based on those contracts. Now, the New Year's Six bowl games have tie-ins from the eight largest conferences. The Sugar Bowl always hosts the top team in the SEC No. 1 vs. the top team in the Big 12. The Rose Bowl hosts the top Big 10 No. 1 team vs. the top Pac-12. The Orange Bowl hosts the top ACC team vs. the top SEC No. 2 team, Big Ten No. 12 or Notre Dame, which is in the Independent Conference. The Cotton, Fiesta and Peach Bowl teams are selected by a committee.
The Caesars Superdome stadium holds 73,208 spectators with the ability to expand up to 76,468.
The SEC tailgates tend to be better than the Big 12 since the fans are more local. With that being said, there are a variety of bars and restaurants around the stadium to enjoy before the game. Also, Caesars Superdome features a hospitality tent that you can enter with a valid ticket to the game. Allstate features the Sugar Bowl Fan Jam, which begins three hours before kickoff with food, interactive entertainment and games as well as special appearances by each team's cheerleading squads and bands.
Over the years, several fierce rivalries have faced off in the Sugar Bowl game.
