Originally known as the Kiel Opera House, Stifel Theatre was first opened in 1934 with a rousing production of
Aida
from the New York Metropolitan Opera. Designed by Louis LaBeaume and Eugene S. Klein, Stifel Theatre has seven venues, including the main theater with a two-story front lobby of Tennessee and Ste. Genevieve marble, four smaller theaters, an exposition hall and a restaurant/basement area. Prominent performers in Stifel Theatre's early days included Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and
Bob Dylan
. Renovated in 2011, and renamed the Peabody Opera House, the reopening event featured Aretha Franklin and
Jay Leno
as dignitaries. In the years since, popular performances at the Stifel Theatre have included
Roger Daltrey
,
The Book of Mormon
,
Oprah's Lifeclass
,
Blue Man Group
,
Chris Rock
,
Willie Nelson
and many others. In 2018, the Peabody Opera House entered a 10-year building-name agreement with Stifel Financial Corp, a business that has been a long-time civic and social influence for St. Louis and became the Stifel Theatre.
