Stephen Hackett is an English singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. He gained popularity as the lead guitarist of the rock band
Genesis
between 1971 and 1977. Steve helped Genesis with six studio albums, three live albums, one EP, and seven singles. In 2010, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Since pursuing a solo career, Steve Hackett has released multiple studio albums and toured worldwide several times.
''
Before departing from Genesis, Stephen released his debut solo album,
Voyage of the Acolyte
, in 1975. The album was originally titled
Premonitions
; however, his management did not like it and suggested the title
Voyage of the Acolyte
. The album peaked at No. 26 on the UK charts before being certified silver. After the success of the album, Hackett decided that he could no longer play in Genesis if he wanted a solo career. His first album after leaving the band was
Please Don't Touch!
, which was released in 1978. The second album contained much more vocal work than the first. Hackett was the lead vocalist in the track Carry on Up the Vicarage.
Please Don't Touch!
reached No. 103 on the US
Billboard
Pop Albums chart and No. 38 on the UK chart. Following the release of his second album, Steve assembled a band for live performances that includes Dik Cadbury, Nick Magnus, John Shearer and Pete Hicks. Steve Hackett's first tour as a solo performer started on October 4, 1978, at the Chateau Neuf in Oslo, Norway. Hackett featured members of his band on his third album,
Spectral Mornings
, that debuted in 1979. While the first two albums were progressive rock,
Spectral Mornings
contained a bit of folk along with rock. The album peaked at No. 138 in the US and No. 22 in the UK. Hackett toured that summer to promote his album. Since then, Steve has released over 20 studio albums as a solo artist.
