Like many musicians on a quest during the 70s to seek out a place to tout their music, Steve Forbert set his sights on New York City. There weren't many options in Meridian. We didn't even have coffee houses. We had pizza joints. I was supposed to go to Millsaps College in Jackson, but I didn't want to. Instead, I went to New York. I had no real plan, I just dove in, Forbert said. He certainly took the plunge when he left the comfort of his native Meridian, Mississippi, home and headed for the Big Apple where he ended up picking his guitar for passersby in Grand Central Station. His folk-rock smash, Romeo's Tune, catapulted him to global stardom during an era when roots rock was being shelved and the music of the Talking Heads and the Ramones was dominating the airwaves. But despite the shift in musical tastes, critics praised Forbert's profound lyrics and infectious melodies. In 1977, John Rockwell, critic for the New York Times, wrote: What makes him remarkable is that he's good already, when he's still growing. And at his frequent best, he's already a star.
A string of memorable tunes followed on such records as Streets of This Town, Little Stevie Orbit, The American In Me, Evergreen Boy and more. His album, Any Old Time, which served as a homage to Jimmie Rodgers, garnered a Grammy Award nod in 2004.
And, in the fall of 2012, Forbert issued Over With You, more than three decades after his very first album hit the streets. Forbert said: This is an album that has taken a lifetime to make. You don't just pull these songs out of thin air - you have to live them. He added, The album is a lot of breakup stuff. Most pop songs you hear are love songs, so there's nothing remarkable about this record except it's really true, and the title song isn't something I would want to live again. The production is really sparse. You can put it on and it will fly by and it kind of sneaks up on you that you've listened to the whole thing. I think that's good.

The gifted Steve Forbert is just one of those artists who has made tremendous contributions to the world of music that has transcended decades. Forbert said, I've never been interested in changing what I do to fit emerging trends.
