'
Steel Pulse was originally formed in 1975 by students at Handsworth Wood Boys School in Birmingham, England, inspired by hearing Bob Marley and The Wailers' album
Catch a Fire
. The band recorded its first single Kibudu, Mansetta And Abuku to connect the picture of the African homeland with the condition endured by young black people in westernized cities. Initially facing backlash because of their Rastafarian religious beliefs, Steel Pulse found an inroad into live performance at punk clubs during the rise of that musical movement. Working closely with the organization Rock Against Racism, Steel Pulse started touring with like-minded bands in the punk scene, eventually opening for Burning Spear and finally finding a footing in the reggae scene.
''
Over its four-plus-decade career, Steel Pulse has released 12 studio albums, including most recently
Mass Manipulation
in 2019, the band's first new album since 2004's
African Holocaust
. Steel Pulse has also released two live albums, eight compilation albums and appears on three other compilation albums. There are also two films of the band,
Live From the Archives
and
Introspective
.
