The Stanford Cardinal basketball team has a long history that dates back to 1913, first as a member of the Pacific Coast Conference, then the Athletic Association of Western Universities and finally the Pac-8 in 1968. Under Head Coach Everett Dean, Stanford won its first and only NCAA Tournament with a 53-38 victory over
Dartmouth
in 1942 despite its best player missing the game with the flu. Stanford did not return to the tournament until the tenure of Head Coach Mike Montgomery, who led the team to a school-record 392 wins between 1987 and 2004. In 1998, No. 3 seed Stanford advanced to the Final Four, where it lost to eventual champion
Kentucky
by a score of 86-85 in overtime. In the final year of Montgomery’s tenure, Stanford reached No. 1 in the polls with a 30-2 overall record and a 17-1 conference record. However, the team was upset in the second round of that year's NCAA Tournament by
Alabama

Some of Stanford's biggest non-conference games include matchups against
Oklahoma
,
Butler
and
San Diego
. In the conference portion of the schedule, Stanford plays
Washington
at home on January 9th and then goes on the road to face an in-state gauntlet of
UCLA
,
USC
and
California
in late January. This is followed by a home game against
Oregon
on February 1st and Arizona on February 15th. The team wraps up its season at home against Washington on February 20th and at Oregon on March 7th. The first round of the
Pac-12 Tournament
then begins on March 11th.

The
Maples Pavilion
, which opened in 1969 in honor of its main donor, Roscoe Maples, has a seating capacity of 7,233. Following the end of upgrades in 2015, the arena now has a center-hung high-definition scoreboard and corner displays for extra statistics and information. Earlier renovations added a concourse around the exterior of the seating area.
''If you are planning to attend a Stanford home game, then there are several traditions you can look forward to. The Stanford band entertains the crowd during timeouts and breaks with a number of different songs, including the Stanford fight song, Come Join the Band. Meanwhile, the raucous tone of the game, including cheers and chants, is set by the Red Zone student section. The basketball program is represented by the Stanford Tree mascot, who shows up at all home games.'

The Stanford basketball team shares a rivalry with fellow in-state Pac-12 teams the
California Bears
, the
UCLA Bruins
and the
USC Trojans
. Since 1950, Stanford has played no other team quite as much as its three main rivals. The teams typically meet once or twice a year and compete for a chance to win the conference championship.
