The St. Louis Cardinals play at Busch Stadium, also known as Busch Stadium III, which opened near the Mississippi River in downtown St. Louis, Missouri, in 2006, with a seating capacity of 44,383. Known to locals as “Baseball Heaven”, Busch Stadium has one of the best skyline views in the Major Leagues and the majority of seats offer panoramic views of downtown St. Louis and the Gateway Arch. Home plate faces southwest, so evening games are often treated to sunset views. The park exterior uses red brick and steel which blend in well with the downtown architecture. Classic arched brick windows and openings are combined with exposed steel, and the third base entrance design pays homage to the historic Eads Bridge. Inside the park there are multiple standing room, social gathering areas and the main seating angles are set so there’s not a bad view in the house. If you’re bringing the kids, visit the Family Pavilion beyond right center field with batting cages, pitching machines, and kid friendly concessions, plus the Cardinals mascot, Fredbird is available for photo ops until the third inning. Busch Stadium was built mostly in front of where the former Busch stadium was demolished. They’ve used the remaining 10-acres to create an outstanding, multi-phase residential and entertainment complex, called Ballpark Village, complete with ticketed rooftop seating that offers a great view of the game day action inside Busch Stadium. Leave some time before the game to stop by Ballpark Village and see the fantastic Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum. It’s filled with Cardinals history, artifacts, a championship gallery, and interactive displays. This is a beautiful ballpark that has been well maintained and updated since it was built. St. Louis is a true baseball city and Busch Stadium deserves its place on baseball fans “must see” lists.

The St. Louis Cardinals were the first baseball team to have an established farm team, created by then manager, Branch Rickey. Owner and manager Branch Rickey is considered a baseball genius by many. He certainly changed the game of baseball in multiple ways, starting with the invention of a farm system in St. Louis to source and train promising young ballplayers. Rickey was the Cards field manager from 1919–1925, before becoming the vice-president and business manager. In 1919 with the price of established players increasing, Rickey had the idea for the St. Louis Cardinals to begin “growing” their own future players. He signed hundreds of young, undeveloped players to a chain of minor league franchises. The idea was a huge success and allowed the Cardinals to compete more effectively against richer teams in bigger cities. They were also able to sell off their surplus talent and gain additional ground. Rickey perfected the farm system used by all major teams today, but he’s quoted as saying that his innovation was less inspired by genius than it was by stark necessity at the time. The Cardinals won 9 league championships with players that were signed during Branch Rickey’s time with the club.
