'Fans who appreciate the history of college basketball will remember the St. John's Red Storm teams of the 1980s, when the school was the perfect foil for the dominant Georgetown Hoyas' squads. With coach Lou Carnesecca and the signature sweaters he wore for good luck, St. John's was a power in the Big East. The team began to recapture some of its previous magic last season by making its first return to the NCAA Tournament since 2015. The players of the Red Storm have begun to reclaim their title as the undisputed kings of New York City basketball and are restoring some buzz to their games at Madison Square Garden. Now, the team enters a new era under Head Coach Mike Anderson with a team featuring plenty of newcomers. Anderson, who most recently led the Arkansas Razorbacks for eight seasons, brings a physical style of play to Queens, and the Red Storm will be playing aggressive basketball. 'The 1980s powerhouse teams were led by Chris Mullin, and his shooting. Mullin set a school record, scoring 2,440 points in his St. John's career, and came back to the Queens campus for a stint as head coach. Mullin was a three-time conference player of the year in 1983, 1984 and 1985, beating out the legendary Patrick Ewing for that honor.'
'Besides Mullin, St. John's has had numerous stars on campus. Al McGuire, who won a national title as coach of the Marquette Warriors, played his college ball at St. John's. Mark Jackson and Bill Wennington were also stars on the Mullin-led squads. Jackson went on to have a long career in the NBA before coaching the Golden State Warriors. Ron Artest, now known as Metta World Peace, played one season at St. John's before going on to become a star in the NBA.'
'St. John's is historically known as the home of all-time great coaches. Lou Carnesecca is a Hall of Fame coach who won 526 games in his 26 years at the school. Joe Lapchick is another previous Red Storm coach who had two stints with the school wrapped around eight years coaching the New York Knicks, Frank McGuire also spent time coaching at the school before he became famous as the coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels.'
