The University of Southern Mississippi — or just Southern Miss to its fans and students — fielded the first football team of the institution's history in 1912. The team's early years saw several coaches and consistent success throughout. Thanks to the efforts of coach Thad Vann, the team made it to the prestigious

Sun Bowl

in 1954. The only bowl game older than this one is the

Rose Bowl

. Thad Vann also brought the Southern Miss Golden Eagles their only two national championships to date. During the 80s, coach and former player Jim Carmody led the team for six seasons, finishing all but one of them with winning records. The Golden Eagles have played in 23 major bowl games over the course of the past several decades. It opened in 1932 as Faulkner Field, named after an area businessman who financed its construction. Thanks to Faulkner's support, workers during the Great Depression were able to construct this version of the stadium for free. By the end of its expansion in 1950, the stadium could hold 15,000 fans. Combined renovations and expansions from the 70s to the present day brought the venue up to its current capacity of 36,000.'
